Released at the end of 2025, the special report by American Pet Products Association (APPA) shows that the global small pet market is undergoing structural growth. Gen Z has become the core group raising hamsters, pet rabbits and parrots, accounting for 34% of small mammal owners and 22% of bird owners, rising by 17% and 22% compared with data in 2023.
The report points out that small pets are no longer regarded as temporary pets for children, but long-term family companionship. In terms of category structure, pet rabbits keep growing in popularity and rank first among small pets in Europe and North America. The breeding quantity of medium and small parrots including budgies and lovebirds increases steadily.
87% of small pet owners regularly buy snacks, toys and other supplies for their pets. The repurchase rate of snacks and functional supplies is far higher than other products. Industry analysts mention that social platforms such as TikTok and Instagram boost small pet culture, continuously driving global demand for specialized small pet snacks, modular cages and enrichment toys. Species-customized food will become the core competitive advantage of brands.
